Webmaster tools - duplicate homepage

In the Google webmaster tools under Content analysis, the homepage is showing up twice, firstly as / then index.php

I've taken index.php out of the xml sitemap and also blocked it with robots.txt

My questions are have I done the right thing and if so, should this work?

Please let me know,

Thanks

Personally, I'd remove the index file from the site map and 301 redirect it to the root. Never heard of excluding it in the robots.txt and wonder if that will create issues, but don't know.

Also, be sure to check all of your internal links to make sure they're pointed to the domain and not the index file.

That's exactly the kind of answer I needed. I was thinking the 301 might be the way.
You would have thought that the webmaster tools would recognise that index and / were the same thing.

Thanks for your help.
