this really varies by site...

I would start by looking at keywords and bounce rate for each and then look at your landing page....perhaps you need to improve your content, or you may find that the content is fine but your SEO may be for the wrong keywords which leads to clicks/visits from users that may be looking for something else.

Sign up for Google Analytics and you can use the benchmarking feature to get a ball park idea. Keep in mind that a blog could have a lot more bounce than a ecom site. The average for Benchmark for bounce shown by Google is currently showing: 45.48%

My bounce rate changes quite significantly for the different traffic sources. It goes from 10% from the direct traffic to 35% for people from emailing.

Completely depend on your website and your theme,
normally less then 40% bounce rate can consider as average.

Under 20%: Extremely hard to achieve and very good.
21%-35%: A good score and probably the one most should aim for
36%-50%: Cause for concern and investigation needed to see if it can be improved
Greater than 50%: Very worrying unless there is good reason.

The normal bounce rate depends on how much competiton there is for the keyword phrase you are targeting. 80% of my traffic comes from my competition; they look and then leave.

What you should look at is not the bounce rate but what the real visitors do on the second click.

Hopefully you guys are not focusing on bounce for ranking purposes. This topic came up on sphinn and Matt Cutts from Googles spam team weighed in the matter. http://sphinn.com/story/93908#c61138

If you think bounce is a a ranking signal (hint, its not) then you should read http://www.huomah.com/Search-Engine...ng-signal-.html
